My Sister’s Dress

The Algonquin Area Public Library District is accepting donations for the 2024 My Sister’s Dress sale program from January 2nd to February 26th, 2024. This includes gently used formalwear like prom dresses, school dance dresses, bridesmaid dresses, mother-of-the-bride dresses, accessories, and formal shoes. We had the most donations in 2023 (270 dresses), so let’s keep that generous energy going into 2024!

What happens to my donated dress?

All donations will be sorted by size the week of February 26th at McHenry County College. They will be sold for $25 per dress on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at McHenry County College. The proceeds of this sale go to the Education to Empowerment scholarship fund — more info on that here. For reference, the 2023 dress sale raised $10,000 and helped several young people! And as we all know, brand new prom dresses are expensive, so your donation will directly help a local teenager (and her mom!) out as well.

Other ways to help?

My Sister’s Dress is completely volunteer based, so if you have some spare time the week of February 26th, they could most likely use help with sorting all of the donated dresses. The Algonquin Library collected about 270 gowns in 2023 and combined with the other county drop-off locations this means a LOT of dresses. There may also be a chance to help out at the sale itself on Saturday, March 2nd. Adults and teens can send a message to [teen@aapld.org] and we will connect you to the My Sister’s Dress volunteer coordinator!
