This summer, SYNC will be providing two free teen audiobooks each week from May 5th to August 11th. Each week will focus on a specific theme, pairing a modern YA title with a more classic YA title. This week starts Thursday, May 12th with The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury and Divine Collision: An African Boy, An American Lawyer, and Their Remarkable Battle for Freedom by Jim Gash. These two titles will be available to download for free this week only (from 5/12 to 5/19) at the SYNC website. The theme for this second week is related to the idea of personal freedom, and how we must sometimes make difficult choices to obtain it.
The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury is a startling, seductive, deliciously dark debut that will shatter your definition of teen fantasy. For four years sixteen-year-old Twylla has lived in the castle of Lormere, as the Goddess embodied, whose touch can poison and kill, and is hence the Queen’s executioner. But she finds herself caught up in palace intrigues when Prince Merek, her betrothed, who is immune to her touch, returns to the kingdom, unsure if she can trust him or the bodyguard who claims to love her. This audiobook is read by Amy Shiels. The library also owns this in book format.
Divine Collision: An African Boy, An American Lawyer, and Their Remarkable Battle for Freedom by Jim Gash, a Los Angeles lawyer and law professor, tells the amazing true story of how he finds himself in the heart of Africa defending a courageous boy languishing in a Ugandan prison. “Was I just a do-gooder tourist, or was I willing to personally invest in the sixteen-year-old Ugandan prisoner into whose eyes I was looking?” Jim Gash asks himself. The unlikely friendship of Jim and Henry and their unrelenting persistence reforms Uganda’s criminal justice system, leaving a lasting impact on hundreds of thousands of lives. Divine Collision attests that relationships can supersede circumstance, culture, and the walls we often hide behind. This audiobook is read by Brandon Batchelar.
