SYNC Audiobooks for the Summer

SyncBanner

This summer, SYNC will be providing two free teen audiobooks each week from May 5th to August 11th. Each week will focus on a specific theme, pairing a classic YA title with a more modern YA title. The first week will start on Thursday, May 5th with The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial by Peter Goodchild and Vivian Apple at the End of the World by Katie Coyle. The theme for this first week is religion, but from two very different perspectives.

GreatTennesseeMonkeyTrialThe Great Tennessee Monkey Trial chronicles the famous Scopes Trial of 1925. This trial was over the right of a science teacher, John Thomas Scopes, to teach evolution in public schools. This court case set the stage for the ongoing debates regarding intellectual freedom and the separation of Church and State within public schools. The audiobook is read by several professional voice actors from the L.A. Theatre Works.

VivianApple

Vivian Apple at the End of the World continues this week’s religious theme. 17-year-old Vivian Apple never believed in the evangelical Church of America, unlike her recently devout parents. But when Vivian returns home the night after the supposed “Rapture,” all that’s left of her parents are two holes in the roof. Suddenly, she doesn’t know who or what to believe. With her best friend Harp and a mysterious ally, Peter, Vivian embarks on a desperate cross-country road trip through a paranoid and panic-stricken America to find answers. This audiobook is read by Julia Whelan. The library also has this as both a Playaway and a book.
